Brands are increasingly putting their items inside mystery boxes in order to capture internet attention.
Unboxing videos, in which producers record themselves deconstructing packages they purchased from brands, have become more popular over the last decade. The first unpacking films focused on things that were ordered separately: YouTubers, for example, unboxed a new PlayStation they purchased online, turning the event into a cinematic experience. YouTubers like Marques Brownlee have racked up millions of subscribers by filming themselves unboxing new technology.
However, brands are gradually elevating unpacking to a completely new marketing approach. A increasing number of companies are offering their items as "mystery boxes," paving the way for unboxing videos in which buyers truly have no idea what's inside — and allowing firms to package their products in a way that's primed to go viral on YouTube and TikTok.
